One Shade of Grey

Ever since late last year, I've been noticing intruders on my head.

They appear without warning, showing up overnight.

I'll be fixing my hair, looking in the mirror and thinking about the day ahead, when BOOM: I see the sparkly little fuckers up there. All smug and stubborn and waving me the finger.

Grey hairs!

I'll admit, in a way, they are kind of pretty. It's that bright, shiny silver kind of grey that looks like Christmas tinsel. But seriously? What the hell? I'm only 33 years old! I'm too young for this.

Then again, there is no official age when we all start going grey, is there? Some of us turn silver or go bald sooner or later in life than others. Then there are other factors like genes. And the amount of stress we endure in life can make us grey, which is pretty evident whenever you see before and after pictures of US Presidents.

This time when I came across the shiny bastards, I found two of them. One was the same one I yanked out last time, and one was in a new place.

But this time, I didn't pluck them out.

Yes, I'm actually going to leave them. I figure they're a badge of honor in a way. On the one hand, it's a terrifying reminder of my mortality. But on the other hand, it's proof that I've survived life long enough to even get grey hairs. After all, we can make it to old age or suffer the alternative. When you think about it that way, getting old isn't so bad, is it?

  1. Awesome post as always, Scarlett. I defy anyone to look at Dame Judi Dench and Helen Mirren and say their grey hair detracts from their beauty. With any luck, we'll all reach our golden years. May as well be dressed appropriately for the occasion.

    1. Yes, two excellent examples of beauty only increasing with age!

  2. Excellent points, Scarlett. I agree with everything you say, in principle. However, I'm a blonde and, while you'd think grey would blend in, it doesn't. My hair is my one vanity, so I'll keep on visiting my stylist every six weeks and paying exorbitant prices to maintain my golden halo. That is until my pocketbook dictates otherwise. 💚

  3. My dad was bald in his 30s so I'm quite pleased with my mane of radiant silver gray!

    1. You got lucky there! My husband is in his 30s and going bald, and he does not like it one bit!

  4. One of my red headed girlfriends said that redheads have less colour pigment in their hair and go grey earlier. Her sister was completely grey by the time she was thirty five.

    1. Wow! Yes, I talked to my hairdresser yesterday, and she said the same thing - that the Irish go grey faster. I may be silver haired sooner than I thought!

  5. I started getting more gray hairs this past year after getting pretty ill. I'm 38, so, it's not unexpected :) But I bought a box of dye just this past weekend...and ended up not using it at all. I kind of like my gray right now, it's framing my face in an interesting way, makes my skin look brighter too. One day, I think I'll dye my hair lavender, instead, then it will blend when it grows in...unless I start going through the rainbow in my dotage, red to blue to purple??, which I think could be fabulous!

    1. Embrace it! And then if the mood strikes, have a blast with all the colors you can dye it! :)
