TAKING THE RISK Spotlight # 3: Santa Fe

 Happy Monday! In this final behind the scenes spotlight for THE NEON FISHNETS BOOK 3: TAKING THE RISK, I wanted to share some pictures of a trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico that I took in 2017. 

In the book, Santa Fe makes a small appearance as a sort of detour (you'll have to read the book to find out exactly what kind of detour *wink, wink*). I wanted to include this city in the story because it's unlike any other I have visited. It has a special vibe. So without further ado, here are some pictures of my trip!

TAKING THE RISK Spotlight # 2: Prada Marfa

 For the second installment of this behind-the-scenes spotlight on THE NEON FISHNETS BOOK 3: TAKING THE RISK, I take you to Prada Marfa:

So, firstly, if you've never heard of Marfa, Texas, it is one of those gems in the state that I didn't even know existed until a few years ago. It's way out in West Texas, out in the middle of nowhere. It took me about 8 hours to drive there from Dallas. But it was so worth it! It's the coolest little artsy town I have ever seen! I had to include it as a detour for the band in Book 3.

One of the town's most famous exhibits, Prada Marfa, is actually located just outside of town. Per ballroommarfa.org: 

"Prada Marfa is a site specific, permanent land art project by artists Elmgreen & Dragset, commissioned by Art Production Fund and Ballroom Marfa. Modeled after a Prada boutique, the sculpture houses luxury goods from the famed brand’s fall 2005 collection of bags and shoes. Located on a barren stretch of highway one mile west of Valentine TX, the artwork will never function as a place of commerce, since the door is always locked." 

Art lovers have debated the meaning of the piece, and for fun, I have The Fishnets discuss it when they visit it in the book.

TAKING THE RISK Spotlight # 1 : San Antonio Riverwalk

 In this first "Behind the Scenes" blogpost for THE NEON FISHNETS BOOK 3: TAKING THE RISK, I wanted to introduce you to the San Antonio Riverwalk!

This city is near and dear to my heart since I have family down there, and I've visited and loved it since I was a little girl. I wanted to include it in the book, so I made it one of the places that The Fishnets performed on their U.S. Tour.

After their performance in the book, CJ takes a stroll down the famed Riverwalk that the city is so known for. Rather than describe this really cool place to you, I found a YouTube video that will let you take a virtual walk - perhaps the next best thing to experiencing it in person!

Spring Upon Us: New Growth, New Stories!

Hi, Gang! This week we are approaching the Vernal Equinox.

If you're in the U.S., you've suffered through the dreaded "Spring Forward" daylight savings time where we all had to set out clocks one hour ahead. Hopefully you've adjusted to your mornings being darker and your evenings being lighter, and if you're in another part of the world and didn't have to make the change, LUCKY YOU!!

I wanted to write a quick blog post to let you know that although I have been somewhat quiet on the blog-writing front, I have been tirelessly working away at starting a new F/F series for you! I'm putting the finishing touches on Book 1 this spring in order to get it ready to send in to my publisher by summer. Without giving too much away, here's an image that relates to the new WIP:

Other than that, 2019 has been going well. For many of us, our New Year's Resolutions have long since been forgotten by now, but I'm hanging on to the strands of a couple of them and modifying them to be realistic enough yet to also meet my needs for growth. I feel that we can start over with our goals at any point in the year. The beginning of Spring seems an especially appropriate new starting place if you want to begin anew.

For me, I'm trying to apply this motto: "If you want different results, you must do things differently."

So whenever I find myself in a funk, not making much progress towards my goals, running around in the same old hamster wheel, I take a careful look at myself and what I'm doing to see if I'm repeating the same old failed things I've done in years past, or if I'm actually trying out new ways to get new results.

2018: The Year in Review

Looking back on 2018, I am thrilled at what a great year it's been! As I have continued to re-focus and re-brand to writing FF romance, I have felt more and more certain that I this genre is where my heart is, and I plan to continue to write more of the same.

Serving as inspiration this year was the powerful, sensual film Disobedience, which released this summer. I was able to see it in the theater and wrote a review of it, which you can read --> here. <-- 

Simply put, I adored this film. I wouldn't be surprised to see it up for some Oscars in 2019. It's that good. I hope to see more high-quality lesbian romance films like this released in the future. I think the world's ready for more! ((Fingers crossed!))

As for my publications in the world of FF romance, this year I was so proud to publish not one, but two lesbian romance books. 

This summer, I released my second lesbian romance novel, CITY SPIRIT, COUNTRY HEART, which has gone on to be my best-selling book to date!

Then, in December, I released my very first Christmas themed story, the FF romance short "A Twist of Christmas Fate." During its first week, it made it to the Top 10 in the LGBT Kindle Short Reads category on Amazon. Another milestone I am so proud of!

But I wouldn't have had such a great year without you, my readers! Every day, I grow more grateful and appreciative of you! 

I also must mention the support of my publisher, which I am proud to work with: Painted Hearts Publishing. Their staff is so knowledgeable and talented and passionate about the business, and I feel honored to be a part of the team. COMING DECEMBER 4th, 2018!

CSCH Spotlight #3: Dallas Museum of Art

Hello, and thank you for checking out the third "behind the scenes" of my contemporary lesbian romance CITY SPIRIT, COUNTRY HEART blog-post series. This one is about the Dallas Museum of Art, which is featured in the novel.

I've been to this museum twice, and both times I've gone, I've wished I had more time. I know the word "amazing" is overused, but this museum is amazing. So. Much. To See.

It's so much more than just an "art" museum to me because it not only features works from all around the world, but it features pieces from all across the timeline of humanity, from modern times to ancient history. It's like stepping into a time machine and connecting with each artist on an intimate level, giving you special insight into what it might have felt like, living in a specific time, in a specific country. That's something the history books will never be able to provide. It's something truly special.

You may be wondering, why put it in a romance novel? Well, I've always thought that museums were a romantic place to visit. Maybe it's because the art and history contained within museums are just such wonderful expressions of raw humanity, like love is. Human beings are unique in the animal kingdom in that we express ourselves with multiple types of art, and we are also unique in that we can fall in love and experience the thrill of romance. Also, it's fun to examine the pieces and to find those that we especially relate to, whether we can explain it or not, and it gives us something exciting and thought-provoking to talk about with a date.

In my novel, Macy and Sophia take a trip here on one of their first dates. Unlike Lamppost, TX, this museum actually does exist--it isn't just a product of my imagination--and you can visit it anytime in real life. I've actually been waiting for a chance to stick it in one of my stories. I took my memories from my most recent visit and used them to flesh out the details of certain pieces that spoke to me as I came across them and observed them. So when you're reading the novel, you're also getting a chance to focus on what I especially liked during my last trip over there!

CSCH Spotlight #2: The Magic of Horses

In my new contemporary lesbian romance, CITY SPIRIT, COUNTRY HEART, love interest and country girl Sophia takes main character and city girl Macy to visit her aunt's horses. I wanted to include horses in this book because of my limited but magical personal experience with these creatures when I lived in Bellevue, TX (For more on Bellevue's role in inspiring the fictional town of Lamppost, TX, --> click here <--).

I was ten years old when I lived in Bellevue, and while there, I had the opportunity to take riding lessons from a young woman who lived in a trailer on some land across the highway. She taught me how to barrel race, which was fun, but I never had any interest in doing it at a rodeo or anything.

She also taught me the difference between a horse's walk, trot, lope, and run. A walk was nice and slow, and a trot felt like riding down a bumpy brick road. The lope was nice and smooth. But the first time the horse took off in a run through the pasture with me on her back, it felt like I was flying. It was truly one of the most exhilarating experiences of my existence.

Horses have intrigued me ever since. I've never owned one, but any chance I get to interact with them, I take. How we could have domesticated such majestic creatures is mind-blowing to me. Happy horses have such a powerful, peaceful aura. Just spending a few minutes in their presence can lift my mood. Feisty, frustrated horses are intimidating to be around; they have the potential to be deadly to humans. I was so happy I had the chance to put these animals in my latest book.

CSCH Spotlight #1: What Inspired Lamppost, Texas?

A large portion of my newest contemporary lesbian romance novel CITY SPIRIT, COUNTRY HEART takes place in the fictional town of Lamppost, Texas. If you were to look for this town on a map, you wouldn't find it. But there are two real-life towns that inspired Lamppost.

After my parents divorced when I was a kid, I found myself moving around a lot with my mother and two younger brothers. One town that we ended up living in for about a year was Bellevue, Texas. I recently had the chance to stop by Bellevue (population 343, as of 2016), and I took some pictures for this post.

One of the town's noticeable features is its powder blue water tower. I parked at the closed post office and snapped this shot:

As a kid, I always wanted to climb up to the top of it, but I never had the guts to do it.

Another memorable feature of Bellevue is the fact that none of its roads are paved. They're all gravel, including the roads that go right by the school:

I have fond memories of walking up and down these gravel roads with my little brothers to kill time during the heat of summer. There wasn't much to walk to; at the time, there was only one gas station in operation, and only one restaurant. We used to amble down to the gas station in the afternoon and buy candy with the coins we'd earned for doing our chores. The gas station is still there, but the original restaurant closed down and is replaced by a newer one. Other than that, there are still a few churches, a post office, and (much to the disgust of most of the town) the out-of-place porn shop just down the highway. Needless to say, my brothers and I were never allowed to visit the sex store!

The second town I based Lamppost on is Jacksboro, Texas, where we also lived for a short time. It's larger than Bellevue (population 4,347 in 2016), and it has an actual town square with a courthouse. There's more to do in Jacksboro, but it's still got that small town vibe going on. I haven't been back to Jacksboro in years, so I don't have any pictures, but if you want to check out the city's web page, --> here's the link <--.

ROADS Spotlight 2: The Allure of Caves

In my new novel, Roads and Revelations, one of the places my girls visit during their road trip is a cave just outside of Eureka Springs, Arkansas. I pulled details of this specific cave from a recent experience in the summer of 2015. Here are a few snapshots I took while I was down in that fascinating little pocket of the world:

Ever since I went on my first cave tour a kid, I have been fascinated by them. They're almost otherworldly, yet they're right under our feet. The temperature drop and the pitch-black darkness are creepy, yes, but when I look at the formations and realize how long it takes for stalagtites and stalagmites to form, the creepiness factor turns into one of scientific wonder for me.

In my early teen years, I was lucky enough to visit Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, and that was an awe-inspiring treat. There was one point where we were exactly a mile beneath the surface of the Earth, and we could make phone calls from a special phone booth to tell people where we were. There were also chasms next to the man-made path that our tour guide said could be miles deep, as they'd thrown things down them and never heard them hit bottom.

Other people find caves as frightening as they do fascinating. For example, I have seen the movie The Descent, which scared the hell out of me.

But I can assure you, in Roads, the cave scene is much more fun and romantic. ;)
